Smuggling of Chinese garlic along the Nepal border has once again gained momentum, triggered by the recent surge in garlic prices across Indian markets. With domestic rates touching ₹160–170 per kg, smugglers are importing garlic from Nepal at ₹70–80 per kg and selling it in Indian cities for hefty profits. A major consignment seized recently in Bhitouli police station limits has brought the entire network under the scanner.
Health experts have issued a strong caution, warning consumers that Chinese garlic is considered harmful for health, urging people to remain vigilant while purchasing.
