During the winter season, fresh cauliflower is a staple vegetable in Indian households. However, the presence of hidden worms and caterpillars inside the florets often becomes a major concern. Even cauliflowers that appear clean on the outside may contain tiny insects deep within, which do not come out with routine washing. Addressing this common kitchen problem, popular YouTuber Praveen Meena has shared an easy and effective desi method that can help identify and remove these pests.
According to Praveen Meena, applying a light coating of mustard oil on the cauliflower is one of the fastest ways to drive out hidden insects. After applying the oil gently over the surface, the cauliflower should be held with tongs and rotated for a few seconds over a low gas flame. As the oil warms up and releases a smoky aroma, worms hiding between the fibers are forced to crawl out immediately. This method is especially useful for insects that remain unaffected by water washing and stay buried deep inside the vegetable.
Apart from the oil-and-flame technique, several other traditional household methods are also considered effective:
Salt and Turmeric Warm Water Soak:
Cut the cauliflower into small florets and soak them in lukewarm water mixed with two tablespoons of salt and one teaspoon of turmeric. Turmeric acts as a natural antiseptic, while salt helps immobilize insects. After 15–20 minutes, worms can be seen floating on the surface.
Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution:
For heavily infested cauliflower, adding half a cup of white vinegar and one teaspoon of baking soda to cold water helps remove fine insects and reduces pesticide residue. After soaking for 10 minutes, the florets should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water.
Sunlight and Cold Water Shock:
Insects are sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Keeping cauliflower pieces in bright sunlight for some time and then immediately immersing them in ice-cold water forces the worms to come out, while maintaining the vegetable’s freshness and crunch.
Blanching Before Cooking:
Blanching cauliflower in boiling salted water for 2–3 minutes, followed by rinsing in cold water, effectively kills worms and their eggs. This method ensures the vegetable is hygienic and safe for consumption.
These simple and affordable techniques can help households enjoy cauliflower dishes without worrying about hidden insects, ensuring both taste and health are preserved.
