Indian Army’s Special Forces to Acquire Water-Based Drones and Advanced Diving Equipment; Approval Expected Soon

New Delhi:
India’s Special Forces are set to enhance their operational capabilities with the acquisition of water-based drones and advanced underwater diving equipment, with approval for emergency procurement expected shortly. The initiative aims to strengthen the forces’ underwater operational capacity and overall tactical effectiveness.

The new drones are modeled on Ukraine’s “Sea Baby” drone, which was deployed in the Black Sea. These high-speed, remote-controlled UAVs carry explosives and function like a miniature suicide drone, detonating near their targets. The Indian Special Forces aim to use similar technology to significantly boost their operational reach and precision.

Upgrading Weapons and Equipment from Operation Sindoor

The Special Forces are also procuring upgraded loitering munitions and Spike missiles used during Operation Sindoor. The loitering munitions will feature extended range capabilities, while the Spike anti-tank guided missiles will provide the forces with a “fire-and-forget” capability across multiple ranges, from short to long distances.

With these acquisitions, the Special Forces are expected to dramatically expand their operational envelope, particularly in underwater and anti-tank operations, maintaining India’s edge in modern warfare technologies.

Officials confirmed that the procurement will be conducted under the emergency acquisition route, ensuring rapid deployment of these advanced systems to the troops. This step reflects the Indian Army’s focus on modernizing its elite units and staying abreast of global defense technology trends.
