
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the eminent freedom fighter and statesman Chakravarti Rajagopalachari on his 147th birth anniversary. Sharing photographs and tributes on social media, the Prime Minister honored Rajagopalachari, affectionately known as “Rajaji,” recognizing him as one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century.
Born on 10 December 1878 in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, Rajagopalachari became the first and last Indian Governor-General of independent India. Prime Minister Modi described him as a leader who always upheld human dignity and moral values.

In his post, PM Modi wrote:
“Freedom fighter, thinker, intellectual, politician—these are the words that come to mind when we remember C. Rajagopalachari. On his birth anniversary, we pay tribute to him. He was among the brilliant minds of the 20th century who placed human values and dignity above all. The nation gratefully remembers his unforgettable contributions.”

PM Modi shared four significant images of Rajagopalachari, including:
- A portrait from his youth.
- Notification of his appointment as a Cabinet Minister.
- A photograph with volunteers from the 1920s.
- A copy of the 1922 edition of “Young India”, which he edited during Mahatma Gandhi’s imprisonment.
Rajagopalachari was a lawyer, intellectual, and early political associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He abandoned his legal career to join the Indian National Congress, participating in several movements against British rule. Known for his pivotal role in the protests against the Rowlatt Act, Non-Cooperation Movement, and Civil Disobedience Movement, he earned the affectionate title “Rajaji.”
