New Delhi: North India continues to reel under intense cold and dense fog. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of severe cold and extremely low visibility in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Bihar from December 19 to 21. Light rainfall and snowfall are also expected in hilly areas due to the influence of a western disturbance.
Widespread Cold and Fog
Across the country, temperatures remain low from the mountains to the plains. States including UP, Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Delhi are experiencing thick fog during mornings and evenings. According to the IMD, visibility is expected to remain severely restricted in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana during early hours. Dense fog may also blanket Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Bihar on December 19–20.
The western disturbance is expected to bring light rainfall and snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from December 20 to 22. Certain areas may witness heavy precipitation or snowfall on December 21. Over the next two days, some regions in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to experience severe cold waves. In the plains, Indore recorded a minimum temperature of 4.5°C, with several states reporting temperatures below normal for this time of year.
Delhi Weather
In Delhi-NCR, moderate to dense fog is expected between December 18 and 21. Visibility at Safdarjung and Palam airports has reportedly dropped to 100 meters. Despite a slight rise in temperatures from December 19 to 21, fog will continue to affect mornings and evenings. On Thursday, smog further worsened the air quality, with 15 areas of Delhi recording an AQI above 400. One area fell under the “poor” category, while the rest remained in the “severe” category.
Weather in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is experiencing intense cold, which is likely to persist in the coming days. On December 19, the western and eastern parts of the state may see clear skies. However, dense to extremely dense fog is expected in some areas, and a “cold day” alert has been issued for parts of eastern UP.
Weather in Uttarakhand
Residents of Uttarakhand face a double impact of cold. Hilly regions are troubled by frost, while plains contend with fog and damp chill.
