Ajit Pawar Retracts Controversial Remark Ahead of Maharashtra Local Body Elections

Mumbai | December 1, 2025:
Just a day before the first phase of Maharashtra’s local body elections, Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar has taken a complete U-turn on his controversial statement that triggered political uproar across the state.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Pawar clarified that his remark made during an election rally—“No votes, no funds” and that “the state treasury is more in my control than the Chief Minister’s”—was said “in anger” and was misinterpreted.
He emphasized, “The Chief Minister is my boss. There is no position above him. My words were presented in the wrong manner.”

Clarification Before Critical Voting Day

Maharashtra will vote on December 2 in the first phase of elections for Nagar Panchayats and Nagar Parishads. With the campaign atmosphere intensifying, the opposition had seized upon Pawar’s earlier statements, accusing him of attempting to intimidate voters.

Senior leaders including Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule had even filed a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging that Ajit’s comments violated the model code of conduct.

Responding to the controversy, Ajit Pawar stated:
“There are no differences within the Mahayuti government. Development is for everyone, whether people vote for us or not.”

Election Commission Cancels Voting in 20 Locations

The State Election Commission has meanwhile annulled polling in 20 municipal areas due to procedural irregularities. Fresh voting in these places, including Baramati—the political stronghold of the Pawar family—will now take place on December 20.

Ajit Pawar’s retraction comes at a crucial time, with political temperatures rising and all eyes on voter turnout. Whether his clarification will influence public sentiment remains to be seen as Maharashtra prepares for the polls.
