Patna: In a bizarre incident, the official social media handle of Bihar’s Water Resources Department posted content praising dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Shockingly, the post remained live for nine months before it was finally deleted following public backlash.
The Controversial Post
The post, made in February 2025, displayed pictures of Hitler and Mussolini alongside a caption claiming: “Two of the most influential politicians of the 20th century stand together; their ideology was absolutely correct.” The post went unnoticed for months, sparking concern over the department’s social media oversight.
Hack or Negligence?
According to reports, the account had been hacked. Department officials confirmed that cybercriminals allegedly took control of the handle, changing its username multiple times. Despite the apparent breach, the post remained visible for nine months, raising questions about the monitoring and management of official social media accounts.
Public Reaction and Backlash
The post drew widespread criticism. Social media users expressed shock and concern over how an official government handle from one of India’s most backward states could host such content for months. Several comments highlighted the need for stricter oversight to protect the state’s reputation.
Other Suspicious Activity on the Account
Apart from the Hitler-Mussolini post, the hacked account reportedly shared and retweeted unrelated content, including Portuguese tourism photos, posts about Donald Trump’s tariffs, and images from his 20th wedding anniversary with Melania Trump. Officials admitted that the department had not been closely monitoring the account, which allowed hackers to exploit it easily.
Immediate Action Taken
Once the issue came to light, the department promptly deleted the controversial post. Authorities are now reviewing security measures for official social media handles to prevent similar incidents in the future.
