The race for the new Uttar Pradesh BJP state president has intensified, with back-to-back meetings taking place from Lucknow to Delhi. Party insiders indicate that the announcement is likely by the end of January 2026, after months of delay and extended internal consultations.
Organizational Process Already Complete
The BJP’s state organizational elections began in October last year. Although the party had earlier signaled that the new state president would be announced by early 2025, the decision was repeatedly postponed citing reasons such as Kharmaas, the Pahalgam terror attack, and the Vice-Presidential election.
With the recent appointment of 14 more district presidents, a total of 84 district presidents have now been finalised—fulfilling more than the 50% requirement needed to elect the state president.
Coordination Between Centre and State Delayed the Decision
A major reason behind the delay was the pending election of the national BJP president. Party leadership wants the announcement of Uttar Pradesh’s chief to align with the choice of the national president to ensure better coordination between central and state leadership.
If the national president belongs to an OBC or Dalit community, UP may get a Brahmin or upper-caste leader, and vice versa.
Political Activity Picks Up After Bihar Elections
According to senior party sources, many BJP leaders were deeply involved in the Bihar elections, where the party secured a massive victory. With the Bihar state president now joining the Nitish cabinet, a new state president must also be appointed there.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, and Delhi are the next priority states where new presidents are to be appointed.
Meetings in Delhi have already begun, and the UP General Secretary (Organization) also visited the national capital over the weekend. Organizational restructuring meetings have been scheduled in Lucknow this week. With Kharmaas beginning on December 16 and ending on January 14, the party is expected to make an announcement by January 26, 2026.
Long List of Contenders
There is no shortage of contenders for the coveted post. However, sources say the party leadership is keen on appointing an OBC leader, keeping the crucial 2027 Assembly elections in mind. The OBC community is the largest vote bank in the state and played a pivotal role in BJP’s 2017 victory under OBC leader Keshav Prasad Maurya.
Key OBC contenders include:
- Dharampal Singh
- Swatantra Dev Singh
- Amarpal Maurya
- B.L. Verma
- Babu Ram Nishad
Prominent Dalit contenders:
- Vinod Sonkar
- Jugal Kishore
- Vidya Sagar Sonkar
Brahmin leaders under consideration:
- Dr. Dinesh Sharma
- Srikant Sharma
- Vijay Bahadur Pathak
- Govind Narayan Shukla
With internal consultations accelerating rapidly, a final decision is expected soon, shaping the BJP’s organizational strategy ahead of the crucial electoral battles in 2027.
