Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya starred in India’s commanding 101-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, and delivered a candid message about his mindset and commitment to the team.
A Stellar Comeback
Pandya, returning from an injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2025 against Sri Lanka, had been sidelined for several months. After showcasing excellent form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he earned his spot in the T20 series against South Africa.
Against South Africa, Pandya smashed a quick-fire 59 not out off 28 balls, featuring 6 fours and 4 sixes, while also contributing with the ball by bowling 2 overs for just 16 runs and picking up 1 wicket. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
On His Role and Mindset
After the match, Pandya said, “I had to trust my shots. Here, you need to show a bit of courage. This wasn’t about hitting with full power but about timing. I’m very satisfied with my batting. The last 6–7 months have been great for my fitness. Spending nearly 50 days away from loved ones at the NCA, working on every aspect, and seeing the results on the field is extremely satisfying.”
He added, “When you get results, it feels amazing. As a cricketer, I never complain about my role. It’s not about what Hardik Pandya wants—it’s about what India wants. Whenever I get a chance, I try to give my best. Some days are good, some are not, but the mindset always helps. Throughout my career, I’ve always put my team and my country first, no matter which team I play for.”
India’s Dominance
Batting first after losing the toss, India posted 175/6 in 20 overs, with Pandya stabilizing the innings after early wickets. South Africa, in response, crumbled to 74 all out in just 12.3 overs, marking their lowest-ever T20I score.
Pandya’s performance was pivotal, exemplifying the blend of resilience, skill, and selfless team commitment that continues to drive India’s dominance in T20 cricket.
