Jaipur: Star Indian batter and former captain Rohit Sharma endured a disappointing outing with the bat in his second match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, getting out for a golden duck against Uttarakhand. However, Rohit quickly made amends with an outstanding effort in the field, producing a sharp catch in the slips that underlined his value beyond batting.
Opening the innings for Mumbai, Rohit fell on the very first ball, attempting his trademark shot on a delivery from pacer Devendra Singh Bora. Fresh from a magnificent 155-run knock in the previous match, Rohit’s early dismissal came as a surprise to the packed Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Rohit’s Fielding Brilliance
While runs did not come off his bat, Rohit made a decisive impact during Mumbai’s bowling innings. Uttarakhand opener Kamal Singh tried to defend a delivery from Shardul Thakur, but the ball took the outside edge and flew towards the slip cordon. Stationed perfectly, Rohit reacted swiftly and completed a clean catch, dismissing Kamal for just one run.
Mumbai Post 331 Despite Rohit’s Duck
Despite losing Rohit early, Mumbai recovered strongly to post a competitive 331-run total while batting first. The second opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi was dismissed for 11, but a crucial partnership between Musheer Khan and Sarfaraz Khan steadied the innings. Both scored fluent half-centuries—Sarfaraz smashing 55 off 49 balls, while Musheer added 55 off 56 deliveries.
In the later stages, Hardik Tamore played a commanding knock of 93 off 82 balls, supported well by Shams Mulani (48) and Shardul Thakur (29). A 95-run partnership between Tamore and Mulani ensured Mumbai crossed the 300-run mark.
For Uttarakhand, Devendra Singh Bora picked up three wickets, including Rohit Sharma’s prized scalp, but proved expensive, conceding 74 runs in his 10 overs.
Though Rohit Sharma’s bat remained silent, his sharp reflexes and presence in the field once again highlighted why he continues to be a vital asset to his team.
