A major theft aboard the Mumbai–Kathgodam Weekly Special (09075) has raised serious concerns over passenger safety in trains. A woman passenger lost a suitcase containing jewellery worth ₹40 lakh from the Second AC coach, adding to the growing list of thefts reported from trains in recent months.
Jewellery-Laden Suitcase Stolen Mid-Journey
According to the Gangapur City GRP, Shashi Gupta, a resident of Badaun, was returning from Mumbai with her family after attending a wedding. She had kept her number-locked suitcase—filled with jewellery and valuables—under her berth in the AC coach.
When she reached Badaun, she discovered the suitcase had been opened and the jewellery stolen. She immediately lodged a complaint with the Badaun GRP, which was later forwarded as a zero-FIR to Gangapur City GRP. A detailed investigation is now underway, but the stolen bag remains untraced.
The Theft Occurred Between Midnight and 4 AM
Shashi told the police that the incident likely took place between 12 AM and 4 AM when the train was running between Dara and Hindaun. Investigators suspect the theft could have occurred at Kota, Sawai Madhopur, or Gangapur City stations.
GRP officials checked CCTV footage from all three stations. Shockingly, cameras at Kota station were found non-functional at the time. The coach attendant has been questioned by both GRP and RPF.
Train Theft Cases Rising Across Routes
This is not an isolated incident. Multiple theft cases have been reported recently from trains passing through Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh:
Kurnool–Durgapura Express: Student’s Suitcase Snatched at 1 AM
Prasoon Bhardwaj of Jaipur reported that his daughter, a student returning from Bhopal aboard the Kurnool–Durgapura Express (19714), had her bag stolen from the A-2 AC coach around 1 AM near Ramganj Mandi. The bag had important documents and personal items.
Amritsar–Mumbai Deluxe: Apple Phone Vanishes Inside AC Coach
In another case, Anjali, travelling from Amritsar to Mumbai in the B-3 coach, discovered her Apple phone missing shortly after the train departed Hindaun. The phone was connected to her smartwatch, which showed the phone’s location inside the coach — yet the thief was not caught.
Bikaner–Bandra Train: Mobile Stolen at 3:30 AM
Passenger Anushree reported her phone stolen from the sleeper coach of the Bikaner–Bandra Special (04711) around 3:30 AM between Vikramgarh Alot and Luni Richha. She later filed complaints at Nagda and Ratlam stations.
Passenger Safety Under Scrutiny
The rising number of thefts in AC and sleeper coaches — often during midnight to early morning — has sparked worry among passengers. Railway security agencies GRP and RPF are under pressure to increase vigilance, fix non-functional CCTV cameras, and deploy more staff on vulnerable routes.
