Ballia, UP: In a major crackdown, the Ballia police have exposed a gang involved in illegal extortion while impersonating police officers. Six accused have been arrested and sent to jail following the operation.
According to reports, the gang used to stop vehicles on the Rasra–Kasimbad state highway, forcibly attach stickers, and demand money from drivers. The scam came to light when a local commuter reported the illegal activity to the police. The complainant stated that while returning home on Sunday, he noticed a long queue of vehicles on the road. Upon approaching, he saw some men in police uniforms and others in plain clothes stopping vehicles, sticking stickers forcibly, and collecting cash.
When the complainant refused to pay, the accused threatened him with a fake challan. Acting on the tip-off, a police team rushed to the scene, where a jam had formed, and several extorting individuals were caught in the act.
Police recovered one Bolero vehicle, around ₹12,000 in cash, mobile phones, and stickers from the site. Investigations revealed that the gang was collecting varying amounts from different vehicles. They also had slips of ₹50, ₹100, ₹200, and ₹300 denominations in their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Anuj Giri, Mandeep Maurya, and Ramdhyan Yadav from Sarai Lakhnsi, Mau district, and Dheeraj Giri, Amit Giri, and Ajay Yadav from Tehbarpur, Azamgarh district. Cases have been registered against all six, and they have been sent to judicial custody. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
