Gonda, Uttar Pradesh: A routine excavation near a temple in Thakurapura village, Balpur, Kurnailganj Tehsil took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when a JCB machine struck a buried earthen jar, revealing a hoard of 509 silver coins.
According to eyewitnesses, the digging was part of local construction work when the JCB’s bucket hit the jar buried in the soil. Upon unearthing it, the jar was found to contain a large number of ancient silver coins, whose design and patina suggested they were quite old.
Suspects Flee With Coins
Before the police could arrive at the scene, the temple priests, Baba Ram Das and Sanjay Baba, were distracted, and the JCB driver, along with his accomplices, took the 509 silver coins and fled. The incident drew a crowd of villagers who had gathered to witness the unusual discovery.

Local authorities are expected to secure the coins and verify their authenticity. The Archaeological Department may also be called in to determine the historical period and significance of the find. Meanwhile, the police have begun search operations to trace the suspects who absconded with the silver coins.
This rare discovery near a temple has created a buzz in Gonda, highlighting the potential of uncovering hidden historical treasures buried beneath the soil.
