Khargone, December 18, 2025: A potentially tragic accident at the Indira Sagar Canal in Khargone district was averted thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of two young men. The incident occurred near Panchvati Hotel on Khandwa Road in the Barwah police jurisdiction, when a young girl struggled to stay afloat in the canal’s strong current.
A Timely Detour Turns Lifesaving
Deepesh from Peeli Mitti and Sujal Belgotia from Dussehra Maidan were on their routine route delivering RO water bottles and cans. A tractor blocking the main road forced them to take a narrow path along the canal—a decision that would ultimately save a life.
Hearing the Cry for Help
As they proceeded along the canal’s edge, the boys heard a desperate “Papa, help!” and immediately spotted the girl clinging to a babool tree branch to avoid being swept away by the water. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they acted instantly.
Improvised Rescue Using Sweater and Hoodie
Without hesitation, Sujal and Deepesh removed their sweater and hoodie, tying them together to create a makeshift rope. Sujal secured one end, while Deepesh held the other and carefully waded into the canal. With remarkable coordination and courage, they pulled the girl to safety.
Medical Attention and Local Praise
The girl was unconscious when rescued and foaming at the mouth. The two young men immediately took her to the Civil Hospital, where she received first aid and was reported to be stable before leaving the hospital later. Local residents lauded the bravery of Deepesh and Sujal, noting that their swift response demonstrates how a small change in route can sometimes save a life.
Deepesh reflected on the rescue, saying, “Saving her life gave me immense satisfaction. I am glad we could act in time.” The incident has now become an inspiring example of courage and humanity for the community.
