Patna’s Anandpuri drainage channel is undergoing a major transformation as work on reconstructing the nala and building its retaining walls has begun. Once the structural base is ready, slabs will be placed over the drain, paving the way for a four-lane road to be constructed on top of it.
Construction Begins from Baba Chowk
The reconstruction work has started from Baba Chowk in the Patel Nagar area. According to officials, the current phase focuses on preparing the base for the new walls, which will support the slab-covered nala.
The project is being executed by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) and aims to strengthen Patna’s key drainage system while easing traffic and improving living conditions. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had laid the foundation stone in August this year.
Anandpuri Nala Will Become a Roadway
A BUIDCO official explained that the Anandpuri nala stretches from Baba Chowk to Rajapur Pul’s drainage pumping station via Atal Path and A.N. College. Of its total length of 4.05 km, about 2.61 km will be rebuilt with a new drain and the proposed road.
Another 0.96 km near Indira Sinha Path will receive precast manhole covers for maintenance. The existing section from Baba Chowk to Atal Path is currently an unpaved stretch with a damaged 12-ft PCC road on one side.
Desilting has been completed, and work on bund construction, boundary walls, pipeline laying and other structural components is underway.
Monsoon Relief Expected
Once completed, the project will significantly reduce monsoon waterlogging in Anandpuri, Shivpuri and Patel Nagar. The two-lane road on top of the nala will also streamline traffic movement.
Plans include street lighting and beautification along the entire stretch to enhance cleanliness, safety and aesthetics.
The state cabinet had approved ₹91 crore for the project, while the executing agency secured the contract with a slightly lower bid of ₹86 crore. Work officially began on July 23 this year.
Two-Year Deadline, 1.5 Lakh Beneficiaries
The project is scheduled to be completed within two years, by July 22, 2027, and is expected to benefit around 1.5 lakh residents. It will primarily cover Patna Municipal Corporation’s Ward 7 (Baba Chowk, Shivpuri, Patel Nagar), Ward 8 (Rajvanshi Nagar) and Wards 22 and 23 (Boring Road and Anandpuri).
Rainwater will be drained through the Rajapur Pul pumping station, while a raw drain from Nehru Nagar (Ward-22C) will also be integrated into the system. The revised drain will have a width of 3 to 4.5 metres and a depth of 2.5 to 3.5 metres.
