Lucknow: A major traffic crisis unfolded at Awadh Chauraha on Monday after a water pipeline burst during excavation work for an underpass. The incident brought construction activities to a halt and led to massive congestion in the area. As soon as the matter came to light, the police swung into action and stopped traffic on the lane leading from Kanpur Road to Charbagh. Teams from Setu Nigam and the Jal Sansthan rushed to the spot to begin urgent repair work.
Setu Nigam is constructing an underpass at Awadh Chauraha to streamline traffic movement. For this, the team was carrying out digging work near the metro pillar in front of Awadh Hospital. During the excavation, an underground water pipeline was accidentally damaged, causing water to gush out forcefully and triggering panic among workers. Within minutes, the lane from Kanpur Road toward Charbagh was flooded.
The strong flow of water also reached the Singar Nagar turn, worsening the situation. Police personnel stationed at the intersection quickly halted traffic on the affected lane to prevent mishaps. The Jal Sansthan team soon arrived and immediately stopped water supply before beginning repairs.
For the time being, traffic on both sides is being diverted through a single lane, leading to severe congestion. Residents of Alambagh and Singar Nagar faced significant water shortages following the pipeline burst. People living around VIP Road also complained of inconvenience. Officers on duty struggled to manage two-way traffic through one narrow passage as long queues of vehicles formed on all connecting routes.
