Sacking Sparks Drama: Lineman Climbs High-Tension Pole in Sonbhadra, Challenges Officers

Tension gripped the Salekhan power substation in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district on Thursday when a contractual lineman, angered by his dismissal, climbed an 11,000-volt high-tension pole and openly challenged senior officials.

Surendra, a contractual lineman posted at the Salekhan Fossil Park road substation, was reportedly removed from service along with several others after the junior engineer alleged that they were “not capable of climbing electric poles.” Furious over the decision, Surendra scaled the high-tension pole and shouted from the top, “Sir, you say I cannot climb a pole—come and see for yourselves!”

A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

Panic Among Onlookers

As the pole was connected to a high-voltage line, the act sparked fear among staff and locals, who worried about the possibility of electrocution. A crowd soon gathered, further escalating tension at the site.

Chopan SHO Kumud Shekhar Singh reached the spot with his team. After nearly half an hour of persuasion, the police, along with department officials, managed to bring Surendra down safely.

Assurance From Officials

Following the incident, police informed SD0 Dharmendra Singh of Robertsganj, who summoned the contractual workers to his office. He assured them that no competent and honest employee would be removed and that the entire matter would be reviewed fairly. “A transparent investigation will be conducted and action will follow as per rules,” he said.

Workers Allege Corruption

Local residents and linemen claim the “pole-climbing issue” is merely an excuse. Allegations surfaced that staff were being removed for not paying bribes, a charge also heard in the viral video where Surendra is heard saying, “I am being removed because I didn’t pay money.”

A senior departmental officer confirmed that the matter has been brought to higher authorities and a thorough inquiry will determine the final decision.
