Ludhiana: A wedding celebration in Ludhiana turned into a scene of horror as indiscriminate gunfire claimed the life of 32-year-old businessman Vasu Chopra. In a brave attempt to protect his wife and three-year-old son, Vasu was fatally shot.
The tragic incident occurred at a prestigious wedding venue in Ludhiana, attended by VVIPs, politicians, and a local legislator. Two groups engaged in a violent dispute over dominance, resulting in nearly 30 rounds being fired. Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swaroop Sharma clarified that this was not a gang-related incident but a clash between local youths, although the accused individuals have significant criminal records.
Vasu’s family is devastated. At his funeral, his young son laid the funeral pyre, repeatedly asking relatives to let him speak to his father over the phone. Witnessing the tragedy, Vasu’s mother broke down, crying out, “Take me with you, Vasu.” According to his brother-in-law, Congress leader Parul Malhotra, the assailants fired without fear, forcing people to flee for their lives. Vasu, who had lost his father only a year ago, was the sole breadwinner in the family.
Victims and Injuries
Besides Vasu, the gunfire claimed the lives of the bridegroom’s aunt, Neeru Chhabra. Vasu’s wife recalled that they were having a meal when the shooting began. Vasu immediately picked up his son, held his wife’s hand, and tried to move them to safety, using his own body as a shield. He was struck in the abdomen and died on the spot.
Accused and Arrests
The main accused, Shubham Arora, aka “Mota,” and Ankur, have prior records of serious criminal charges, including attempted murder. Shubham faces 18 FIRs, while Ankur and his associates Rubal and Jasveer Singh are also involved in criminal cases. So far, Ankur and four others, including a woman who sheltered him, have been arrested. Three private security guards stationed at the venue are also in custody for allowing armed individuals inside. Of the 18 identified suspects, only two are in police custody, while Shubham remains at large.
The incident has left the community shocked and mourning, highlighting the urgent need for tighter security at public gatherings.
