Modus Operandi of the Gang
The arrested gang members, Ankit Yadav (24) and Dindayal Yadav (45), residents of Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh, were exploiting the UPiCop app to download FIRs and extract victims’ personal details. They would then threaten victims claiming their sons or daughters had been arrested, demanding money via QR codes to “resolve” the cases. Failure to pay, they warned, would result in imprisonment.
In one documented case, the duo targeted Savita from Mehnagar, whose daughter had been reported missing. They defrauded her of ₹22,000 by promising to resolve the case.
Multi-State Impact
Police investigations revealed that Ankit Yadav’s mobile contained copies of 12 FIRs from districts including Aligarh, Gonda, Ghazipur, Amroha, Gorakhpur, Auraiya, Amethi, and Hamirpur. Additionally, complaints were traced across Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and several districts of Uttar Pradesh on the NCRP portal, indicating the gang’s extensive reach.
Police Response and Public Advisory
Senior Superintendent of Police, Anil Kumar, stated, “This operation is a significant blow to cyber criminals. Citizens are urged to immediately report any cyber fraud attempts to 1930 and inform the cyber police.”
The successful arrest at Azamgarh railway station has sent a strong message to cybercriminals: they can no longer operate with impunity, and ordinary citizens are now safer from such sophisticated scams.
