Mumbai, Maharashtra: Maharashtra witnessed a historic political moment on Wednesday as brothers Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray reunited after two decades. The long-awaited reunion marks a new chapter in the state’s political landscape, and at the center of this reconciliation was a key figure affectionately known as “Chandu Mama.”
Chandu Mama’s Role in the Reunion
Raj Thackeray had left Shiv Sena on November 27, 2005, to form the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). On Wednesday, he announced the alliance between MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT), ending 20 years of political separation. The press conference revealed the pivotal role of Chandra Kant Vaidya, popularly called Chandu Mama, in bringing the brothers together. Dressed in a red kurta, he was warmly welcomed by both Raj and Uddhav Thackeray on stage. Political analysts had considered such a reconciliation almost impossible—but Chandu Mama succeeded where others doubted.
A Family Connection
Chandu Mama is the maternal uncle of Raj Thackeray, being the brother of Raj’s mother, Kunda Thackeray. Residing in Ramdham, he has long been a respected elder in the Thackeray family. His guidance and counsel were instrumental in facilitating meetings between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray. Following discussions with family members, both brothers accepted his advice and moved forward with reconciliation. Chandu Mama expressed his joy, stating, “I am very happy. We have been trying for so long, and finally our efforts have borne fruit. Thanks to our ancestors, Devi Tulja Bhavani, and all of you.”
Political Context of the Alliance
The reunion was shaped around shared concerns, including the contentious issue of making Hindi compulsory as the third language in Maharashtra. Despite overlapping spheres of influence in Marathi-majority areas, political analysts initially doubted the alliance would be possible without risking the stability of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). However, on December 24, at the Blue Hotel in Worli, Mumbai, both Thackeray brothers publicly pledged to unite on Marathi issues, language, and the welfare of Maharashtra.
Historical Significance
The alliance comes as a surprise in the context of previous elections. In the 2017 BMC elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party, with Shiv Sena securing second place and MNS winning seven seats—down from 27 in the prior election. With this renewed alliance, Maharashtra politics may witness a significant shift as both parties commit to working together for the state and the Marathi cause.
