Patna: A recent incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has triggered nationwide attention and controversy. During a ceremony in Patna where Ayush doctors were receiving appointment letters, CM Nitish Kumar allegedly touched and adjusted the hijab of a young female doctor, Nusrat Parveen, while handing her the letter. The incident, which took place in the presence of Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary, Minister Mangal Pandey, and other officials, has sparked widespread debate and legal scrutiny.
Who is Nusrat Parveen?
Nusrat Parveen is a young, married woman and a qualified Ayush doctor who had recently been selected for a position in the Bihar government. Her husband works as a clinical psychologist at a college. Nusrat comes from a hardworking background and has steadily achieved her professional goals. Her brother is a professor at a government law university in Kolkata. The hijab incident reportedly caused her significant emotional distress.
Decision to Decline the Job
Following the incident, Nusrat Parveen decided not to join the Bihar government post, despite her appointment being scheduled for 20 December 2025. Her family advised her against taking up the position due to the psychological impact of the incident. Her brother informed the media that Nusrat remains deeply affected and cannot easily forget what happened.
National Attention and Reactions
The incident has drawn reactions across the country. JDU leaders like Jama Khan defended CM Nitish Kumar, while Afzal Ansari claimed the CM adjusted the hijab only for visual purposes. However, criticism has also come from prominent figures, including Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Jammu & Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti, who expressed strong disapproval. Opposition parties, including RJD, questioned the mental balance of the CM on social media. Meanwhile, some public voices suggest that the issue has been unnecessarily blown out of proportion.
The hijab controversy has now become a major topic of discussion in political and social circles, highlighting concerns around personal space, respect, and cultural sensitivity in official settings.
