Ghaziabad/Delhi: A tragic accident on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) claimed the life of a biker and left two others critically injured when an Omni van, travelling in the wrong direction, collided with a motorcycle. The van, en route to Ghaziabad for a delivery, struck the three men while attempting a shortcut to avoid a longer route.
The deceased has been identified as Aman Chaudhary (43), a resident of Vaishali, Bihar, who had been working in Greater Noida for the past month-and-a-half. Riding with him were Jitendra Kumar (40) from Crossing Republic and Sonu Kumar (38) from Chipiyana. Aman was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Accident Details
The collision occurred near Amrapali Village, close to Kala Patthar, when the van approached from the wrong direction. The impact was so severe that all three men were thrown from the motorcycle. Shockingly, the van’s wheel ran over Aman’s head, resulting in instantaneous death. Jitendra and Sonu were critically injured and rushed to Manipal Hospital, Lal Kuan. They were later transferred to GTB Delhi and Yashoda Hospital, respectively, with both remaining in critical condition.
Driver Arrested; Shortcut Blamed
The van driver, Rahul Das of Tughlaqabad, was arrested after Aman’s wife, Kanchan, filed a police complaint. In police questioning, Rahul admitted that he had been using Google Maps to reach Ghaziabad for deliveries and inadvertently entered the DME in the wrong direction. Attempting a shortcut to avoid the longer route via ABES Cut or Dasna, he drove back in the wrong direction, leading to the fatal collision.
Recurring Wrong-Way Issues on DME
Authorities note that vehicles often enter the DME from UP Gate in the wrong direction, attempting to turn back incorrectly due to lack of traffic personnel at entry points. Such maneuvers frequently result in life-threatening incidents, highlighting the urgent need for stricter traffic monitoring on the expressway.
