Think Twice Before Using Laptop Covers or Tempered Glass: Accessories Could Do More Harm Than Good

Many users instinctively protect their gadgets with covers, tempered glass, or other accessories, but when it comes to laptops, these precautions may actually increase the risk of damage rather than prevent it. Experts warn against five common laptop accessories that can inadvertently harm your device.

Tempered Glass: A Hidden Threat to Screens
While tempered glass extends the life of smartphone screens, applying it to modern slim laptops can be dangerous. Today’s laptops are compact, with minimal space between the keyboard and screen. Installing a tempered glass protector adds extra thickness, and even slight pressure—from closing the lid or placing the laptop in a bag—can crack the screen. To prevent scratches without risking damage, experts recommend placing a simple A4 sheet between the screen and keyboard when closing the laptop.

Laptop Covers: Not Always Necessary
Laptop covers may seem protective, but they can trap heat, interfere with ventilation, and strain hinges. Laptops generally face a lower risk of accidental drops compared to smartphones, making heavy covers unnecessary. If a cover is essential, choose a thin model with ventilation cutouts and one that can be removed easily during use.

Camera Shutters: Use With Caution
Inspired by Mark Zuckerberg, covering the laptop camera has become common. Some laptops include built-in camera shutters, which are safe to use. However, external camera covers can get trapped between the screen and keyboard, potentially cracking the display. A simple piece of colored tape over the camera is a safer alternative.

Keyboard Covers: More Risk Than Protection
Keyboard covers are marketed as protective, but they can exert pressure on the laptop’s screen from inside when the lid is closed. Many laptops, including Apple models, leave only 0.1 mm of clearance between the keyboard and screen, so thicker covers can damage the display.

Trackpad Protectors: Avoid Them
Trackpad films may seem useful, but they degrade your user experience, interfere with gestures, and offer little real protection. Experts advise avoiding them altogether.

The Bottom Line
While laptop accessories may appear to protect your device, they often create new risks. Experts recommend using minimal, well-designed accessories, relying on careful handling, and avoiding items that add pressure between the screen and keyboard. A thin A4 sheet, removable covers, and built-in shutters offer safer alternatives than heavy protectors or extra films.
