Ottawa/Edmonton: The tragic death of 44-year-old Indian-origin Prashant Shrikumar in Canada has raised serious questions about hospital care and emergency response protocols. On 22 December, Shrikumar was rushed to Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton after experiencing severe chest pain. Despite his repeated complaints, he reportedly waited for eight hours before receiving treatment, ultimately succumbing to a cardiac arrest.
Family Alleges Negligence
According to Shrikumar’s family, hospital staff initially conducted a check-up and then sent him to the waiting area, assuring him there was “nothing serious” and that he should remain calm. Shrikumar repeatedly reported unbearable chest pain and high blood pressure, but staff delayed urgent treatment. Several hours later, he was finally moved to the treatment room, but by then it was too late. Attempts to revive him failed, and Shrikumar passed away.
Personal Loss
Prashant Shrikumar, who worked in Edmonton, leaves behind his wife and three young children, aged 3, 10, and 14. His sudden death has devastated his family, who and friends hold the hospital staff responsible for the delay in treatment.
Hospital Response
Grey Nuns Community Hospital and Covenant Health expressed condolences over the incident but declined to provide further comments. The case has been referred to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office for investigation.
This incident highlights growing concerns over emergency medical care standards and has prompted calls for a review of hospital protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
